 Underwriting FAQ

As a non-commercial educational radio station, KCSS operates in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations. To maintain compliance, underwriting messages must adhere to specific guidelines, meaning they cannot contain promotional language or directly encourage listeners to engage in a business or financial transaction. What is the underwriting process at KCSS?

Our Promotions Director will draft a script that complies with FCC guidelines while effectively highlighting key aspects of your business. Once the script is completed, we will send it to you for review and approval. After approval, a KCSS team member will record and schedule the announcement for broadcast at the agreed-upon times.

What are the requirements for an underwriting message on KCSS?

Since KCSS is a non-commercial station, all underwriting messages must remain objective. Each message may include the following:

  • Business name

  • Address

  • Phone number

  • Hours of operation

  • A brief, factual listing of up to four products or services (e.g., deep-dish pizza, a salad bar, live music)

How do I make a payment for underwriting?

Payments for underwriting sponsorships must be made online here through our under the “Merchandise” section. This will redirect you to our secure payment processor, Transact (Cashnet). When making your payment, please select “KCSS Underwriting Sponsorship.”

Your card will not be charged until all underwriting details have been finalized and approved.

How often will my announcement air?

Each underwriting slot represents one hour of airtime. Your announcement will be played twice per slot—once at the top of the hour and again at the half-hour mark.

For example, if you purchase a slot for 4 PM, your announcement will air at 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM.

  • "This hour of broadcasting is sponsored by Joe’s Pizza Place, located at 1234 First Street. Open Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 9 PM, they offer deep-dish pizza, a salad bar, and drinks. Thank you to Joe’s Pizza Place for supporting local college radio! For more information, call (209) 123-4567."

  • "Support for KCSS is provided by Coffee Cafe, located at 201 Main Street in Modesto, California. Open Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 7 PM, they offer coffee, pastries, and open mic nights. Thank you to Coffee Cafe for supporting local college radio! For more information, call (209) 123-4567."
